What is a cricket table?

A cricket table is a traditional small occasional table supported by three legs. The three-legged design ensures the table remains stable on uneven farmhouse floors. These pieces typically feature a round wooden top above splayed legs joined by stretchers. They served versatile domestic purposes in English country interiors.

How do I use a vendange table?

A vendange table functions as an adaptable surface for drinks, lamps, or display. The folding mechanism allows the top to tip or drop flat against a wall. Originally built for French vineyard work, these tables suit modern living rooms and kitchens where flexible space matters. Their character complements both traditional and rustic interiors.

What timber was used?

Cabinet makers utilised regional hardwoods and softwoods depending on local availability. Oak forms the primary material for English examples, frequently paired with yew or fruitwood. French variations often combine cherry timber with oak frames. Painted finishes and iron bracing appear on specific utilitarian formats.

How do I date an antique table?

Dating relies on examining the construction methods, tool marks, and wood shrinkage visible beneath the top. Eighteenth-century pieces display hand-cut joinery and pegged tenons. Later nineteenth-century and Edwardian examples often incorporate standardised turnings and machine-sawn components. Comparing the timber patination helps confirm the age of the piece.

Where were these tables made?

These pieces originated in rural workshops across England, Wales, and France. Regional centres developed distinct styles, such as Welsh vernacular tables or French provincial folding formats. Local craftsmen built them for everyday domestic use rather than royal courts. This regional diversity creates the varied selection found today.
