Where should I hang a rococo sconce mirror?

These mirrors suit spaces where reflected light enhances the atmosphere, such as above a mantelpiece or flanking a sideboard. Pair them symmetrically on a main wall to make the most of their integrated candle arms and ornate silhouettes.

How do I distinguish 18th century pieces from later revivals?

Examine the depth of the hand-carving and the construction methods visible on the reverse of the wooden frame. Eighteenth-century examples display distinct tool marks and period joinery compared to later 19th-century revivals. The condition and composition of the mirror glass and gilding also offer clues to the actual period of manufacture.

Can I still use the candle branches for lighting?

Many pieces retain their original candle sockets and arms, though safety requires careful monitoring if lit with real wax candles. Alternatively, you can enjoy them as purely decorative wall sculptures without burning candles.

What is the difference between a mirror and a girandole?

A standard wall mirror focuses purely on reflection and decorative framing, whereas a girandole specifically incorporates attached candle branches. This functional addition changes the proportions and architectural purpose of the wall hanging.
