How do I choose the right height?

Consider the ceiling height of your room and the placement of surrounding furniture when selecting a tall lamp. A well-proportioned standard lamp should integrate harmoniously with neighbouring seating without dominating the space. Ensure the light source sits at a comfortable level relative to eye height when seated nearby, particularly if the piece functions as a reading light.

Are these lamps safe to use today?

Many vintage and antique lighting pieces benefit from rewiring to meet contemporary electrical standards. It is standard practice to have a qualified electrician inspect older wiring before daily use. Checking the stability of the base and the integrity of the lamp holder ensures the fixture remains safe for your home.

Where should I place a floor lamp?

Floor lamps work exceptionally well in corners that require ambient illumination or beside armchairs for task lighting. Their vertical presence helps to break up empty wall spaces and adds depth to a room's lighting layout. Positioning the piece near an electrical outlet avoids the need for trailing cables across walkways.

How do I date an older lamp?

Dating relies on examining the materials, manufacturing techniques, and stylistic motifs characteristic of specific decades. Art deco pieces often display geometric chrome work, while earlier examples favour turned wood and brass. Maker marks, switches, and the construction of the lamp holder can also provide reliable clues regarding the period of manufacture.
