How do I use a vintage cocktail shaker?

Fill the metal or glass body with ice and your chosen spirits, secure the lid firmly, and shake vigorously to chill and aerate the contents. Strain the liquid through the built-in barrier into glasses. Ensure any cork stoppers or integrated components are fitted correctly before shaking to prevent leaks. Rinse the vessel promptly after use to protect the interior plating.

How do I clean silver plated barware?

Wash the pieces gently in warm water using a mild washing-up liquid and a soft cloth. Dry them thoroughly immediately afterwards to prevent water spots. Avoid abrasive scourers or harsh chemical dips that can strip the silver plate or damage enamel and Bakelite elements. Use a dedicated silver cloth occasionally to maintain the shine.

How can I tell the period of a cocktail shaker?

Examine the decorative style, materials, and any maker marks stamped on the base. Pieces featuring geometric motifs, chrome, and Bakelite typically date from the nineteen-thirties Art Deco era. Simpler forms or specific manufacturer stamps often correlate with post-war production in the nineteen-forties and fifties. European pieces may also carry stamps indicating their country of origin.

Are these vintage shakers still watertight?

Many vintage shakers retain their original functionality, though cork seals or metal threads can wear over decades of use. Testing the vessel with cold water first is advisable. If a cork seal has dried out or degraded, replacement corks can often be fitted to restore a secure seal during shaking. Glass and metal screw caps generally maintain their integrity if undamaged.
