How do I install a vintage brass pendant?

Vintage ceiling fixtures require standard electrical wiring compatible with modern building regulations. Professional installation ensures the mounting bracket supports the weight of the brass and glass safely. Many fixtures accommodate standard modern bulb fittings, though older sockets may require professional rewiring to meet current safety standards.

How do I clean antique brass and glass?

Dust brass components gently with a soft, dry cloth to preserve the natural patination. Avoid harsh chemical polishes that strip historical surface character. Glass shades can be removed and washed in warm, soapy water. Ensure the glass is completely dry before reattaching it to the metal fixture.

What is the difference between Art Deco and Victorian brass lights?

Victorian lighting tends to feature ornate ornamentation, heavy cast brass, and elaborate glass shades such as pink crimped glass or oil lamp conversions. These pieces emphasise traditional craftsmanship and heavier silhouettes. Art Deco lighting from the 1920s and 1930s favours geometric lines, streamlined forms, and frosted or opaline glass globes. These designs reflect a modern, industrial aesthetic compared to earlier styles.

Can I use these fixtures in a modern interior?

Period brass fixtures add contrast and historical depth to contemporary spaces. Their metallic finishes coordinate easily with modern brass or bronze hardware. Scaling is the main consideration when placing a chandelier or pendant in a modern room with standard ceiling heights.
