What subjects do these paintings show?

These works typically portray biblical narratives, iconic figures like the Madonna and Child, and venerated saints from Christian history. Subjects range from large-scale martyrdoms and transfigurations to quiet devotional portraits used for personal prayer and contemplation.

How do I care for antique canvases?

Antique canvases require stable indoor humidity and temperature to prevent the oil paint from cracking or the canvas from sagging. Keep them away from direct sunlight and dust them gently with a soft, dry brush without applying liquid cleaners.

How are periods identified?

Periods are determined through stylistic analysis of the brushwork, the pigments used, and the construction methods of the canvas or panel. Inscriptions, subject matter conventions, and the framing style also provide key chronological markers for dating.

Where were these pieces displayed?

Original locations included churches, monastic chapels, and private domestic altars across various European regions. Smaller devotional panels and reverse glass works were specifically designed for intimate domestic prayer spaces.
