How do I choose the right shade?

Select a shade that matches the proportions of the ceramic body, ensuring the fitting sits securely on the top mount. Simple fabric or silk shades allow the rich glaze of the base to remain the focal point. Consider the colour of the room and the height of the table where the lamp will stand. A neutral lining inside the shade maximises the downward light cast.

Are these lamps converted from old vases?

Many examples started as 18th century or 19th century porcelain and earthenware vases before receiving electrical fittings at a later date. This adaptive process preserves historic ceramic artistry within a functional modern context. The drilling required for wiring is typically handled with care to protect the structural integrity of the antique body. Makers often utilised existing rim mounts to secure the hardware without causing damage.

How should I clean the ceramic body?

Dust the surface gently with a dry, soft cloth to prevent the accumulation of dirt in the recesses of the glaze. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners that might compromise the antique finish or the metal mounts. Keep the lamp away from direct sunlight to preserve the vibrancy of the red pigments over time. Check the stability of the base and mounts periodically during routine maintenance.

What periods do these lamps come from?

The ceramic bodies span the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, alongside early 20th century studio pottery and art deco pieces. Japanese Meiji and Edo periods are well represented alongside Chinese Qing dynasty vessels. The conversion work and electrical hardware often date from the Victorian era up through the 1930s. This combination creates pieces that blend ancient ceramic traditions with vintage lighting technology.
