What is a portable campaign table?

A portable campaign table is a piece of folding furniture constructed to travel easily with officers and travellers. These items utilise clever mechanisms like X-frame bases to pack flat. They bridge the gap between temporary utility and domestic comfort, appearing across the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in various timbers.

How do I use a coaching table today?

Coaching tables function well as flexible side tables, occasional surfaces, or plant stands in modern rooms. Their folding nature allows you to store them away when floor space is needed. They bring historic character and practical surface area to sitting rooms, studies, or hallways without dominating the room.

How do I identify campaign furniture periods?

Dating relies on timber choices, brass hardware styles, and general cabinet-making techniques seen across different eras. Georgian and Regency pieces show refined proportions, while Victorian and Edwardian examples often incorporate utilitarian folding designs. Looking closely at the fastenings and secondary woods helps place a piece within its nineteenth or early twentieth-century context.

Were these tables only for military use?

While originating from the needs of military officers on campaign, similar folding tables served diplomats, explorers, and domestic travellers. The portable nature suited anyone requiring functional furniture that moved between locations. Their practical design soon crossed over into regular home use as garden or occasional tables.
