What defines a period wooden table?

A period wooden table originates from a recognised historic era, such as the Georgian, Regency, or seventeenth century. These items were built by hand using traditional timbers like oak, mahogany, and walnut. Such tables derive their character from the construction methods and aesthetic standards of their specific century. They range from utilitarian gateleg designs to formal dining and library furniture.

How do I identify the wood used?

Identification relies on examining the grain pattern, colour, and density of the timber. Oak displays prominent medullary rays, while mahogany offers a reddish-brown tone with a fine grain. Walnut and elm exhibit distinct swirling figures that help distinguish them from standard softwoods. Historic workshops selected these materials for both their structural strength and visual presence.

Where were these tables used?

These tables served various rooms within historic households, from grand dining halls to private libraries and bedrooms. Smaller occasional tables and stands were easily moved to suit daily domestic activities. Larger formats remained fixed in dining spaces or central hallways. Their placement depended entirely on their functional design, whether for writing, dining, or displaying decorative objects.

How should I care for antique wood?

Maintaining antique wooden surfaces requires stable indoor humidity and protection from direct sunlight. Regular dusting with a soft cloth preserves the finish without building up heavy chemical residues. Avoiding excessive moisture prevents the historic timbers from warping or splitting. Gentle care ensures the natural patina develops further over time.
