What is a secretaire bookcase?

A secretaire bookcase combines a tall book storage unit with a pull-down writing desk drawer. The fitted interior conceals small compartments for stationery. These pieces served as multi-functional furniture for libraries and parlours during the Georgian and Regency periods.

How do I date a wood bookcase?

Dating relies on identifying the prevailing style, construction techniques, and primary timber choices. Georgian and Regency pieces often feature figured mahogany and rosewood, while Victorian and Edwardian examples introduce burr walnut and alternative hardwoods. Hardware details like brass grilles and inlay styles also provide key chronological markers.

Where were these bookcases made?

Most pieces originate from British cabinet-making workshops active during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Regional variations and imported influences also appear, including carved hardwood pieces from Meiji period Japan. Workshops utilised native and exotic timbers depending on the prevailing fashion.
