What is a carver chair?

A carver is an armchair designed to accompany a set of dining chairs, typically positioned at either end of a dining table. These pieces share the timber, legs, and back design of the smaller side chairs in the set while providing armrests for the seated person.

How do I identify a Regency chair?

Regency chairs often feature classical motifs, rosewood or mahogany timbers, and brass inlay work reflecting early nineteenth-century design. Look for elements like saber legs, reeded frames, and classical proportions influenced by archaeological discoveries of the period.

Are dining chair sets all the same age?

Many large sets of dining chairs were assembled or expanded over time to meet the demands of larger dining rooms in later decades. Examining the underside, timber grain, and joinery helps determine if chairs within a set share identical workshop origins or represent matched groupings.

Where were library armchairs used?

Library armchairs were heavy, upholstered seats placed in private studies, libraries, and withdrawing rooms for reading and formal conversation. Their robust mahogany or walnut frames and upholstered pads provided comfort during long periods of study.
