What is a tier bookcase?

A tier bookcase is a multi-level shelving unit designed to hold books and display decorative objects in an upright format. These pieces use stacked horizontal surfaces to maximise vertical space. They appear in various formats, including open freestanding units, graduating waterfall designs, and wall-hanging shelves dating from the Georgian and Victorian periods.

Where should I place a tier bookcase?

These pieces suit living rooms, studies, and hallways where floor space is limited but vertical display is useful. Their compact footprints allow them to fit into alcoves or narrower wall spaces. Freestanding whatnots and open bookcases work well against flat walls, while hanging shelves attach securely to display books at eye level.

How do I distinguish Regency from Victorian pieces?

Regency pieces often display classical restraint, featuring rosewood or mahogany timbers, delicate brass inlays, and elegant turned supports. They reflect design influences from the early nineteenth century. Victorian pieces tend to be heavier in proportion, frequently utilising walnut or darker mahogany, with more robust turnings and occasional elaborate carving reflecting later nineteenth-century tastes.

Are these bookcases suitable for heavy books?

Many tier bookcases and whatnots were originally built for lighter reading material, decorative volumes, and ornaments rather than heavy reference sets. The graduating shelves on waterfall models, for instance, accommodate smaller octavos near the top. Checking the stability of the upright supports and shelf fixings helps determine the appropriate weight for everyday use.
