What is a tallboy chest?

A tallboy chest is a vertical storage unit created by placing one chest of drawers directly on top of another. This design provides maximum drawer space while using minimal floor area. Historically, these pieces served bedrooms and dressing rooms to hold linens and garments. They remain practical storage solutions in modern homes today.

How do I date a tallboy?

Dating relies on examining timber choices, construction techniques, and decorative hardware styles. Oak and walnut predominate in 17th and early 18th-century pieces, while mahogany defines the Georgian era. Drawer construction also offers clues, as hand-cut dovetails and solid timber linings change in subtlety over the decades. Secondary woods provide further context regarding a piece's regional origin.

Where should I place a tallboy?

A tallboy suits bedrooms, dressing rooms, or wide hallways where vertical wall space is available. Its height draws the eye upward, making it useful in rooms with high ceilings. Securing the upper and lower sections properly is essential during placement. Positioning the piece away from direct heat sources protects the antique wood from drying out.

What is the difference between walnut and mahogany tallboys?

Walnut tallboys typically date from the late 17th century through the early Georgian period, often featuring rich grain patterns or decorative veneer work. Mahogany versions usually emerge later in the 18th century, showcasing deep reddish-brown tones and solid timber construction. Each wood dictates a distinct aesthetic, with walnut offering intricate figuring and mahogany providing robust elegance. Both materials age gracefully with proper waxing and care.
