What is a period seating set?

A period seating set is a matched group of antique chairs, typically dining chairs or hall chairs, originating from historical eras such as the Georgian, Regency, or Victorian periods. These collections provide a unified historical style for a room, often maintaining consistency in timber, carving, and silhouette across four, six, eight, or more pieces.

How were these dining chairs used?

These chairs served primarily around dining tables for formal meals and daily family gatherings within large houses and town residences. Larger sets frequently incorporated matching carvers with armrests for the hosts, while single chairs accommodated guests along the sides of the table.

How do I live with antique chairs?

Living with antique seating involves placing them in stable room environments away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity changes to protect the timber and joints. Regular careful use and appropriate maintenance of leather, fabric, or cane upholstery help preserve the structural and decorative integrity of the set over time.

How can I tell different styles apart?

Styles are distinguished by specific design motifs and structural silhouettes, such as the curved balloon backs of the Victorian era or the geometric pierced splats of Chippendale and Hepplewhite influences. Examining the turning on the legs, such as reeded or barley twist details, and the overall timber choice helps identify the period or revival style of the chairs.
