How do I date a portrait?

Dating relies heavily on the sitter's costume, hair styling, and lace collars, which shifted rapidly across decades. Comparing the canvas technique and stretcher construction to known historical examples also helps narrow the period. Signatures, inscriptions on the reverse, and stylistic traits associated with specific reigning monarchs offer further chronological markers for the collector.

What does circle of mean?

This term indicates the artist trained or worked closely alongside a major master rather than being the master himself. It reflects authentic period execution sharing the workshop's exact aesthetic and palette. Such attribution provides strong contextual value for buyers seeking works from prestigious artistic dynasties without paying primary-hand prices.

How should I hang an oil portrait?

Hang these canvases on sturdy walls away from direct sunlight and fluctuating heat sources like radiators. Stable indoor climates prevent the canvas and wooden stretchers from warping over time. Ensure the weight is supported securely by appropriate wall fixings, particularly when dealing with large works housed in heavy giltwood frames.

Are original frames important?

Original or period-correct frames enhance the historical integrity and visual harmony of a portrait. A matched giltwood frame from the same century completes the presentation as the artist intended. While paintings frequently changed frames over hundreds of years, finding a piece with its contemporary surround is considered a significant bonus.
