What is a parquetry bedside commode?

A parquetry bedside commode is a small decorative storage cabinet featuring geometric wood veneer patterns, often finished with a marble top. These pieces originated in continental Europe, particularly France. They serve as functional bedside tables that introduce period character and intricate woodwork into a bedroom scheme.

How do I date a commode?

Dating relies on examining the construction methods, timber choices, and stylistic cues present in the piece. Eighteenth-century examples differ in carcass construction and dovetailing from nineteenth-century revival interpretations. Matching the veneer types and hardware styles against known historical periods helps narrow down the decade of manufacture.

Are marble tops original?

Marble tops on antique commodes are frequently original, selected to provide a durable and luxurious surface. The type of marble, such as breche d'alep, often aligns with the geographical origin and period of the cabinet. Inspecting the seating of the stone within the wooden frame helps determine whether the top has remained with the piece over time.

How do I care for wood veneers?

Wood veneers require stable room temperatures and protection from direct sunlight to prevent drying and fading. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth maintains the surface without the need for heavy chemical polishes. Care should be taken around marble edges and gilt bronze mounts to avoid scratching the surrounding timber during maintenance.
