What periods do these cupboards date from?

The pieces span from the mid-nineteenth century through the Victorian and Edwardian eras up to the nineteen-thirties. Evidence includes specific dates such as seventeen-fifty for Italian work, alongside eighteen-sixty Dutch pieces and nineteen-hundred examples. Buyers will find that stylistic markers often align with these periods, such as Sheraton Revival details in Victorian pieces or distinct French Provincial forms from the early twentieth century.

Are matching pairs commonly available?

A significant portion of the inventory consists of matched pairs, particularly in French, Swedish and pine variants from around nineteen-hundred. These offer symmetrical placement on either side of a bed. Single cupboards also appear frequently, originating from various European workshops and featuring distinct regional decorative treatments.

What materials are used for the tops?

Many bedside cupboards feature wooden tops in painted pine, oak or mahogany, while others incorporate fitted marble slabs. Some examples include upstands to contain objects placed on the surface. Marble-topped versions are particularly prevalent among continental European pieces, offering a practical, wipe-clean surface for bedside use.

How do regional styles differ?

Regional variations range from Gustavian and Swedish painted cupboards to ornate Italian apothecary pieces and English Sheraton Revival designs. French models often feature refined carved details or Louis XVI styling. Hungarian and East European pieces frequently utilise solid pine and oak construction with distinctive painted finishes, while Chinoiserie examples showcase lacquer work.
