How do I date a metal garden bench?

Dating relies on stylistic clues and construction methods. Pieces featuring heavy cast iron scrollwork, strapwork, or Gothic revival motifs typically point to the nineteenth century. Twentieth century examples often show lighter steel frames, simpler scroll benches, or French folding designs from the nineteen-twenties and thirties.

Can these seats stay outdoors year round?

Most cast and wrought iron pieces tolerate outdoor conditions well due to their heavy metal construction. Many survive from the Victorian era precisely because of this durability. However, pieces that combine iron with wood or fabric benefit from winter storage or protective covers to preserve the secondary materials.

How do I maintain original paint on iron?

Preserving original paint layers requires gentle cleaning rather than aggressive scraping or stripping. Light brushing removes debris without disturbing the historic surface. Where bare metal is exposed, targeted sealing protects the iron from further oxidation while keeping the surrounding aged finish intact.

What is the difference between cast and wrought iron?

Cast iron is poured into moulds, resulting in rigid, highly ornate components with thick profiles. It provides the heavy structure seen on Victorian garden seats and lion mask armchairs. Wrought iron is forged by hand into slender, flexible bars, creating the strapwork patterns and scroll benches associated with Regency and nineteenth century styles.
