How do I wire an antique gilt light?

Most antique wall lights and chandeliers require professional rewiring to meet contemporary safety standards. Qualified electricians can thread modern internal flex through historic brass and bronze arms without damaging the outer finish. Many pieces arrive pre-rewired or ready to install, but checking the internal lamp holders ensures compatibility with standard modern bulbs.

Where should I place a gilt wall sconce?

Gilt wall sconces suit living rooms, hallways, and dining spaces where reflective metal surfaces bounce ambient light around the room. Pairing them on either side of a fireplace or mirror creates a balanced, formal composition. Ensure they are mounted at a height that shields direct bulb glare while highlighting the detailed bronze or brass casting.

How do I clean gilded bronze?

Dust gilded bronze and brass gently with a soft, dry cloth to prevent the accumulation of grit in recessed ornament. Avoid harsh commercial metal polishes, which strip away gold leaf and historic patination. Light application of microcrystalline wax can protect exposed metal surfaces from moisture and atmospheric tarnishing over time.

What is the difference between an ormolu and a brass light?

Ormolu specifically denotes high-status gilt bronze created through a mercury gilding process, yielding a deep, distinct golden lustre. Brass forms a yellow alloy of copper and zinc that manufacturers often plated with gold or simply polished to a bright finish. Examining the weight, colour depth, and sharpness of the chasing helps differentiate between solid gilt bronze and standard brass.
