How do I date a giltwood frame?

Examine the construction joints at the corners and the composition of the gesso layers beneath the gold leaf. Earlier frames often display hand-carved wooden elements rather than cast plaster mouldings. Inspect the back of the timber for tool marks and signs of age, such as oxidisation of the metals used in the gilding process.

Can I hang these heavy frames on any wall?

The substantial weight of giltwood and gesso surrounds requires secure fixings anchored directly into wall studs or masonry. Standard picture hooks are generally insufficient for these heavy historical pieces. Consult a professional framer or installer to ensure the hanging wire and wall brackets can support the combined load of the canvas and frame safely.

How do I clean an antique oil painting?

Dust the canvas and the intricate crevices of the frame gently using a soft, dry artist's brush. Avoid using water, household cleaners, or chemical solvents on the painted surface. Professional conservators should handle deeper cleaning, varnish removal, or the repair of chipped gesso on the decorative surround.
