How do I clean marble and ormolu?

Dust marble gently with a soft cloth and avoid acidic cleaners that etch the polished stone surface. Wipe gilt-bronze mounts carefully without rubbing, as harsh abrasives will damage the historical gold layer. Keep moisture away from both materials during maintenance to prevent staining the stone and corroding the underlying metal joins.

Are these pieces purely decorative or functional?

Many items serve practical purposes alongside their decorative appeal, such as chests of drawers, writing desks, and bedside cabinets providing concealed storage. Candlesticks, lamps, and clock sets combine utility with sculptural presence. Larger furniture pieces function well as primary surface areas in living spaces while maintaining a strong stylistic focus.

How do I identify Louis XVI style features?

Louis XVI style pieces display a shift away from asymmetrical curves toward straight lines, symmetry, and classical architectural proportions. Look for fluted columns, rectangular carcases, and crisp neoclassical leaf motifs in the metal mounts. The marble tops on these pieces typically follow clean geometric rectangles or break-front shapes rather than flowing serpentine contours.

What is a marble garniture set?

A garniture set consists of matching decorative vessels or candelabras designed to sit alongside a central mantel clock as a unified tabletop display. They share identical stone bases, colour palettes, and gilt-bronze mount designs. Originating in French domestic interiors, these sets provide visual symmetry when placed across a fireplace mantel or console table.
