What is an original artwork sketch?

An original artwork sketch is a direct, one-off drawing or painting executed by an artist on a paper support. These works show the initial creative process, ranging from rapid compositional notes to finished portrait studies. Such pieces provide collectors with an intimate glimpse into an artist's working method, free from the mechanical reproduction found in prints.

How should I display drawings on paper?

Drawings and watercolours on paper require careful placement away from direct sunlight to prevent fading of inks, watercolours, and tinted papers. UV-filtering glass and acid-free mounts help protect the delicate materials from environmental degradation. Keeping them in stable indoor humidity conditions ensures the paper support remains flat and free from warping or foxing over time.

How do I date an antique sketch?

Dating an antique sketch involves examining the watermark and texture of the paper, the chemical composition of the ink or pigments, and the framing style. Stylistic clues within the clothing, architecture, or handwriting on the sheet also offer reliable chronological markers. Comparing the technique to known examples by the same school or period helps narrow the timeframe of creation.

What is the difference between a sketch and a painting?

A sketch generally emphasises line, gesture, and rapid notation of a subject, often serving as preparation for a larger work. Paintings tend to involve built-up layers of opaque or translucent colour designed as finished, autonomous compositions. Many works on paper blur this distinction by combining rapid ink lines with careful watercolour washes.
