How were military miniatures displayed?

These small portraits were typically hung in private rooms, kept on desks, or carried as personal mementos by family members. Their intimate scale allowed officers and their relatives to keep likenesses close at hand during long separations caused by active service.

What uniforms do the subjects wear?

Subjects appear in the formal dress, undress uniform, or campaign attire appropriate to their specific regiment and rank. Common examples feature red coats, naval uniforms, and distinctive regimental facings that help identify the historical branch of service.

How can you tell the period?

Dating relies on the style of the uniform, the hairstyle of the sitter, and the framing techniques characteristic of the eighteenth or nineteenth century. Changes in military tailoring and the evolution of painting materials from watercolours on paper to specialised panels offer clear chronological markers.

Were these painted from life?

Many portraits were executed from direct sittings with the officer, particularly when commissioned by the regiment or family prior to deployment. Others were created as commemorative works or copied from larger oil paintings following notable promotions or campaigns.
