How do I identify a Windsor chair?

A Windsor chair is distinguished by its thick, shaped wooden seat into which the legs and back spindles are driven directly. They rely on stickback or bow-shaped construction rather than a traditional framed back. Common regional timbers include ash, elm, and fruitwood, resulting in sturdy seating originally designed for country kitchens and vernacular spaces.

Where were smokers bow chairs used?

Smoker's bow chairs served as sturdy, low-backed seating in studies, offices, and smoking rooms during the nineteenth century. Their continuous curved armrails provided robust support for everyday tasks. Cabinetmakers often built these chairs from birch, ash, or elm, prioritising durable utility and comfort over delicate ornamentation.
