How do I care for marquetry wood armchairs?

Maintain the timber and veneer by applying traditional beeswax periodically to nourish the wood and preserve the polished finish. Avoid placing these chairs in direct sunlight or near heat sources to prevent the delicate veneer from drying and lifting. Keep upholstered sections clean using gentle brushing suited to the specific fabric type. Ensure structural joints remain stable by avoiding excessive weight loads on lighter occasional or corner chairs.

Are these armchairs suitable for everyday use?

Many Edwardian and Victorian models remain structurally sound for regular daily sitting, provided they receive careful handling. Solid timber frames combined with sound joinery offer reliable support for modern seating requirements. However, delicate antique frames with extensive mother-of-pearl inlay or intricate structural carving benefit from lighter use. Placing them as accent or salon chairs preserves their historical surfaces over time.

How do I distinguish Edwardian from Victorian pieces?

Victorian examples tend to feature heavier proportions, darker mahogany timbers, and robust carving alongside dense marquetry. Their silhouettes often reflect revivalist movements with an emphasis on solid presence. Edwardian interpretations generally exhibit lighter forms, brighter satinwood inlays, and refined Sheraton Revival influences. The overall aesthetic leans toward airiness and delicate neoclassical grace.

What defines a corner chair?

A corner chair is built with a diagonal plan, positioning one leg at the front centre and a semicircular backrest supported by corner posts. This layout allowed the seat to fit neatly into room corners while offering versatile access. Inlaid examples incorporate decorative wood panels along the crest rail and splats, transforming a utilitarian room-fitting seat into an ornamental focal point.
