What is a marquetry cabinet with mirror?

A marquetry cabinet with mirror is a nineteenth-century storage and display piece featuring intricate wood inlay and an integrated glass mirror. These items were designed for formal reception rooms to showcase decorative objects while reflecting light around the interior.

How do I date a Victorian cabinet?

Dating relies on identifying timber choices, construction techniques, and stylistic markers recorded across nineteenth-century examples. Reference points include the transition from heavy burr walnut credenzas of the mid-nineteenth century to lighter rosewood and marquetry side cabinets towards nineteen hundred.

Where were these cabinets placed?

These furnishings typically stood against the main walls of Victorian dining rooms, drawing rooms, or parlours. The mirrored backs and display shelves served to amplify natural light and present ceramics, glass, or silver.

What woods are commonly used?

The primary carcases utilise dense hardwoods veneered in burr walnut, rosewood, or kingwood. Contrasting details are achieved through lighter timbers such as boxwood inlay set directly into the darker surface veneers.
