What is a partners desk?

A partners desk is a substantial double-sided writing table built with storage cupboards and drawers accessible from both the front and the back. This configuration allowed two individuals to work opposite one another in shared offices or libraries. These large tables generally stand free in the middle of a room rather than pushed against a wall. They represent some of the most impressive nineteenth-century workspace furniture available.

How do I distinguish a Davenport desk?

A Davenport desk is readily identified by its compact proportions, sloping top, and side-opening drawers. The slanted writing surface is typically lined with leather and lifts to reveal internal compartments. Originating in the nineteenth century, these small pieces suit compact studies or bedrooms where a full pedestal desk would overwhelm the floor space.

Where should a freestanding desk go?

A freestanding desk is finished on the back as well as the front, allowing it to sit in the middle of a room. This placement showcases the timber grain and any inlaid decoration from every angle. Ensure you leave adequate clearance around the chair and surrounding furniture so drawers and writing slides can open without obstruction.

How do I care for leather desk tops?

Leather desk surfaces require gentle treatment to prevent the material from drying out or cracking over time. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and avoid placing hot cups or moisture directly onto the hide. Applying a specialist leather balsam periodically helps maintain suppleness and preserves any gilt tooling running along the borders.
