What is a jardiniere table used for?

A jardiniere table is designed to hold potted plants, flowers, or decorative jardinieres inside the home. These stands elevate greenery to eye level and protect household surfaces from moisture. Beyond plant display, many pieces function adequately as general side tables, vase stands, or small pedestals for ornaments.

How do I date a mahogany plant stand?

Dating relies on observing stylistic markers, timber characteristics, and construction methods. Pieces from the Georgian and Regency periods show different leg profiles and joinery compared to later Victorian or Edwardian items. Inlay styles also shift over time, with Edwardian examples frequently displaying delicate satinwood and boxwood details typical of the early twentieth century.

Are these tables waterproof?

Many traditional stands include fitted metal liners, such as zinc, designed to catch water drainage from potted plants. These liners protect the underlying mahogany and hardwood structure from direct moisture damage. Protective liners should still be checked and emptied regularly to prevent standing water from affecting the surrounding timber.

Where were these stands made?

The pieces originate from various regions, notably English workshops producing Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian furniture. Chinese export workshops also manufactured substantial numbers of hardwood and mahogany vase stands for Western markets. French influence appears through pieces inspired by the French Empire style, utilising marble and brass alongside rich timber.
