What is a toilet mirror?

A toilet mirror is a portable looking glass set into a small wooden frame, often equipped with tiny drawers at the base. These pieces sat upon tables or chests before tall standing dressing mirrors became common. They allowed users to adjust their reflection closely during morning routines and could be moved around the room to catch the best light.

How do I use a washstand today?

Historic washstands with marble tops provide durable surfaces that handle moisture well, making them practical for modern bathrooms or plant displays. Their original basins may be absent, leaving a useful ledge. Lower shelves originally designed for water jugs now serve neatly for storing towels or baskets.

How do I distinguish Edwardian from Victorian pieces?

Victorian pieces tend to be heavier in build, utilising dense mahogany and sometimes elaborate carving or dark finishes. They often feature large rectangular or oval mirrors. Edwardian furniture generally feels lighter, frequently incorporating satinwood inlay, brighter mahogany tones and simpler lines influenced by revival styles.
