How do I identify eighteenth-century pieces?

Authentic eighteenth-century examples display hand-cut joinery marks, native timber shrinkage, and wear patterns consistent with age. Construction methods and traditional tool use distinguish them from later revival copies. Examination of the secondary woods inside drawers and carcass backs also clarifies the period of manufacture.

A commode is a low chest of drawers or cabinet designed for domestic storage, frequently featuring a marble top. These items served functional roles in reception rooms and bedrooms alike. In this style, they often showcase serpentine fronts and elaborate veneer work.

How do I care for ormolu mounts?

Ormolu mounts require gentle dusting with a soft dry cloth to prevent abrasion of the gold surface. Moisture and chemical cleaners damage the delicate gilt layer over time. Preserving the original patina depends on avoiding abrasive polishes entirely.

Where should I place a vitrine?

A vitrine or display cabinet suits drawing rooms or studies where porcelain and small objects receive optimal lighting. Glass panels protect delicate contents while maintaining visual openness. Positioning them away from direct sunlight protects both timber veneers and internal displays.
