How were these rugs used originally?

These large carpets served as principal floor coverings in country houses and formal rooms, chosen for their ability to define large spaces and absorb heavy wear. Their robust construction made them suitable for high-traffic areas while providing decorative warmth beneath major furniture groupings.

How do I live with a room size carpet?

Position the piece in a low-moisture room where foot traffic passes evenly across the surface, helping the wool pile wear uniformly over time. Protect the cotton foundation by placing the carpet on a flat, breathable underlay that prevents slipping and reduces friction against hard flooring.

How do I tell different production periods apart?

Earlier examples from the mid to late nineteenth century often display distinct vegetal dye nuances and slightly more relaxed geometric drawing in the border systems. Pieces from the early twentieth century frequently present sharper medallion outlines and standardised room dimensions suited to Edwardian and later interiors.

The Northwest Persian aesthetic relies on sturdy, rectilinear interpretations of classic floral motifs rather than curving, fluid lines. Bold corner spandrels and prominent central medallions create an architectural balance across the field. This geometric discipline separates the group from finer urban Persian weaving traditions.
