What is a Davenport desk?

A Davenport is a compact Victorian desk featuring a sloping top for writing and a set of drawers accessed from the side. It was originally designed for domestic correspondence and fitted easily into smaller rooms. Many examples include hidden compartments, stationary wells, and swivel seats, making them versatile pieces of antique furniture for modern living spaces.

How do I use a sloping desk today?

These desks serve well as laptop stations or dedicated spots for handwritten letters and journaling. Their compact proportions allow them to fit comfortably into bedrooms, hallways, or living rooms. Internal compartments and small drawers keep modern stationery, pens, and small accessories neatly organised and out of sight when the slope is closed.

What is a bureau de dame?

A bureau de dame is a feminine writing desk, typically associated with French styles and nineteenth-century craftsmanship. They often feature curved cabriole legs, delicate woodwork, and metal mounts. These desks prioritise decorative elegance alongside practical writing surfaces, making them prominent focal points in a room.

How do I identify a Victorian desk?

Victorian desks are identified by their characteristic use of dense timbers like walnut and mahogany, often enhanced with burr veneers, brass inlays, or marquetry. Construction methods typical of the period include hand-cut dovetails on internal drawers. Stylistic influences range from classic English forms to French revival designs incorporating ormolu mounts and satinwood interiors.
