What is a kitchen storage sideboard?

A kitchen storage sideboard is a functional timber cabinet designed for domestic provisioning, encompassing dresser bases, cupboards, and sideboards. These pieces provide surface space alongside enclosed shelving and drawers for daily utility.

How were these sideboards used?

Historically, these pieces stored kitchenware, linens, and foodstuffs in country houses, farmhouses, and domestic kitchens. The top surface served for food preparation or serving, while lower cupboards held heavy pots and stores.

How do I date an oak dresser?

Dating relies on construction methods, timber choice, and hardware styles across the piece. Early 18th century examples show pegged joints and hand-sawn oak boards. Later Victorian and Edwardian pieces utilise machine-cut timbers and standardised ironmongery.
