What is a kingwood tea table?

A kingwood tea table is a decorative occasional or folding table veneered in exotic violet-brown kingwood, typically styled after French eighteenth-century designs. These pieces were built in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to serve tea or function as games and card tables in formal reception rooms.

How do I care for kingwood veneer?

Protect kingwood furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and maintaining steady indoor humidity levels. Sudden temperature shifts can cause the underlying wood to expand and the delicate veneer to lift. Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth and avoid commercial silicone polishes that build up residue over time.

Are these tables strictly for tea?

Many tables designed with folding tops served multiple functions in the Victorian parlor, doubling as card and games tables when opened. The interiors often conceal baize-lined playing surfaces or compartments for cards and counters. Today, buyers use them as display surfaces for lamps and ceramics or as functional occasional tables in living spaces.

How do I identify a revival style?

Nineteenth-century revival pieces emulate the curving lines and asymmetric motifs of the original French rococo period. Look for signature elements like cabriole legs, shaped aprons, and prominent ormolu mounts. Maker attributions and construction methods help separate genuine nineteenth-century interpretations from later decorative reproductions.
