How do I measure for a bedstead?

Measure the width and length of your available bedroom space carefully, accounting for protruding brass finials and side irons. Check your mattress dimensions against the specific double, king, or super king size listed. Verify whether the frame uses standard modern mattress proportions or requires adjustments to fit historical dimensions comfortably.

Are these beds easy to assemble?

Most antique metal bedsteads utilise a simple slot-in frame system with side irons that wedge securely into the headboard and footboard posts. This wedge mechanism allows for straightforward assembly without complex tools. Having two people helps align the heavy iron components safely during setup.

How do I care for brass and iron?

Dust the iron framework regularly with a dry cloth and clean painted surfaces using mild, non-abrasive soap and water. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners that might strip the protective paint. Polish brass elements gently with a dedicated metal cleaner, taking care not to let the polish stain adjacent painted iron surfaces.

Can I use a modern mattress?

Many nineteenth and twentieth century frames accommodate standard modern mattress sizes, though older proportions occasionally vary slightly. Review the exact width descriptions such as small double or extra wide king before purchasing. Adding a supportive modern slatted base inside the side irons ensures proper foundation support for contemporary mattresses.
