How do I care for antique hardwood furniture?

Maintain the timber by keeping pieces away from direct heat sources and sudden humidity changes to prevent wood movement. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth preserves the polished surface. Avoid using silicone-based polishes or harsh chemical cleaners which can degrade original finishes and natural wax coatings over time.

Where were these cabinets placed originally?

Bedside cupboards and lamp tables served practical functions in sleeping quarters and reception rooms for holding personal items and lighting. Pedestals and urn stands supported decorative objects or plants in hallways and parlours. Smaller dwarf cabinets and corner tables maximised awkward spaces while offering enclosed storage for household goods.

How can I distinguish between periods?

Nineteenth-century Chinese pieces often display traditional Qing carved motifs, inset marble panels, or mother of pearl inlay on dense rosewood and padauk. Victorian and Sheraton revival examples reflect British aesthetic movements through mahogany construction and refined inlay. Examinations of joinery techniques, timber weight, and decorative hardware help clarify the manufacturing origin and approximate era.
