How do I display a garniture?

A garniture typically consists of three or five matched vessels arranged symmetrically along a mantelpiece or large sideboard. The tallest piece usually sits in the centre with the matching smaller vessels flanking it. Ensure adequate space around each piece so the hand-painted details remain visible from different angles in the room.

What is a spill vase used for?

Historically, spill vases sat near hearths to hold thin rolled paper or wooden spills used to transfer fire from the grate to candles and pipes. Their narrow cylindrical shape kept these tapers upright and within easy reach. Today, collectors frequently repurpose them to hold single stems or small bunches of dried flowers.

How do I distinguish Satsuma ware?

Satsuma ceramics display a distinct ivory-coloured, crackled earthenware glaze that forms a fine network of lines across the surface. Artisans painted detailed scenes over this glaze using rich polychrome enamels and heavy gold leaf. Signatures or kiln marks are often found on the base, indicating the artist or workshop responsible for the decoration.

Where were mantel lustres placed?

Mantel lustres traditionally stood on fireplace mantels, often accompanied by hanging glass prisms that refracted candlelight in the room. They functioned as ornamental pieces rather than utilitarian candleholders. Placement in areas with natural light also enhances the reflective quality of the glass and any enamel painting.
