How do I identify a Victorian green armchair?

Victorian armchairs often feature dark timbers like walnut or mahogany, substantial proportions, and upholstery methods such as button-backing. They may also display revival styles including Gothic elements or deep cushioning designed for domestic comfort during the nineteenth century.

Where were these chairs and sofas used historically?

These seating forms served multiple domestic functions, from dining chairs gathered around large tables to intimate bedroom and nursing chairs. Larger sofas, settees, and library armchairs were placed in reception rooms and parlours for entertaining or reading.

What woods are commonly found in these frames?

Makers predominantly utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, and rosewood for their strength and suitability for carving. Other materials include oak in Gothic Revival pieces, satinwood in earlier seating, and giltwood or painted finishes on French-style frames.
