What is a green tufted sofa?

A green tufted sofa is an antique or vintage piece of seating featuring deep buttoning and green leather, velvet, or fabric upholstery. These range from Victorian Chesterfields to Regency library sofas. They combine robust timber frames in mahogany, walnut, or rosewood with traditional upholstery methods to create a distinct traditional aesthetic.

How do I date a green tufted sofa?

Dating relies on examining the timber frame style, carving details, and construction methods. Victorian pieces often display rich mahogany or rosewood with elaborate scrollwork, while Regency examples lean toward classical lines. Signatures or stamps from makers like Howard and Sons or James Shoolbred provide more precise periods.

Where should I place a settee?

These settees suit drawing rooms, studies, and large living spaces where their substantial timber frames and deep green upholstery command attention. Chaise longues work well in bedrooms or bay windows. Keep them away from direct sunlight and strong heat sources to protect the leather or fabric and the underlying timber.

What materials were used?

Frames utilise solid timbers including mahogany, walnut, rosewood, ebonised wood, and general hardwood. Upholstery consists of deep green leather, velvet, or woven fabric. Internal construction typically involves traditional stuffing, webbing, and springs secured beneath the buttoned surface.
