What are gold leverback drop earrings?

Gold leverback drop earrings are pierced earrings equipped with a hinged lever closure that fastens behind the ear. They suspend gemstones or decorative metal drops below the lobe. This design provides extra security compared to standard posts and backs, making them practical for daily wear while displaying antique stones.

How do I date Edwardian drop earrings?

Edwardian drop earrings often utilise a combination of 18ct yellow gold and platinum settings. This dual-metal technique maximises the brilliance of old cut diamonds. Look for fine millegrain edges, delicate pierced work, and organic motifs that characterise jewellery made around the reign of King Edward VII.

What is a dormeuse earring?

A dormeuse is a traditional European earring style designed with a secure, comfortable fastening meant to be worn continuously. They frequently employ leverback mechanics. Victorian and Edwardian versions often incorporate small seed pearls, diamonds, or gold flower motifs suited to this intimate style of wear.

How do I care for antique drop earrings?

Care for antique drop earrings by storing them individually in soft pouches to protect old cut diamonds and softer gems like seed pearls or tourmalines. Clean them gently with mild soapy water. Avoid harsh chemical dips, especially on pieces containing organic materials or closed-back foils, and check the hinge mechanism periodically.
