How do I identify the period of a portrait?

Dating relies on stylistic clues found in the subject's clothing, hairstyle, and the construction techniques of the canvas stretcher or panel. Frame profiles and joining methods also offer strong chronological indicators. Examinations of the reverse side often reveal historical labels, stamps, or canvas weavers' marks that narrow down the exact decade of creation.

Are these paintings original or copies?

The selection includes both original works painted from live sitters and later period copies or tribute pieces after established masters. Each listing specifies whether the artwork is an authentic contemporary record or a subsequent interpretation. Studio samples and works produced by followers or circles of major artists represent important historical categories in their own right.

How should I care for a gilt frame?

Giltwood frames require a stable indoor environment away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and rapid temperature fluctuations. These factors can cause the underlying gesso and wood to crack or warp. Dust the carved surfaces gently with a soft, dry brush rather than liquid cleaners, which can damage the delicate gold leaf layer.

Can these portraits be re-framed safely?

Original frames are integral to the historical context and value of antique oil paintings. Removing a piece from its period surround is generally discouraged by collectors. If framing adjustments are necessary, consult a professional restorer to ensure the canvas or panel remains properly supported without tension.
