How do I date a scent bottle?

Dating relies primarily on hallmarked metal mounts, specific glass colours, and prevailing design styles like Art Deco or Victorian. Maker marks stamped onto silver collars often pinpoint the exact year of production. Stylistic shifts in the cutting of the glass and the shape of the stopper provide further chronological clues when hallmarks are absent.

Were these bottles meant for travel?

Many examples were manufactured specifically for transit, housed securely inside fitted leather, rosewood, or walnut travel boxes. These sets typically contained multiple glass bottles with tight silver caps to prevent spills. Smaller individual flasks functioned as pocket accessories, while larger heavier vessels remained stationary on dressing tables.

What is silver overlay?

Silver overlay involves bonding a thin sheet of sterling silver directly onto the exterior surface of the glass bottle. Artisans then cut away portions of the metal to reveal the coloured glass underneath in decorative motifs. This technique gained popularity during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, particularly within Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau styles.

How should I clean my bottle?

Maintenance requires gentle dusting of the exterior and avoiding harsh chemical dips on silver mounts that feature enamel. If the interior requires cleaning, warm water and a soft brush work best without disturbing aged patinas. Stoppers should remain unforced if stuck, utilising mild solvents carefully around the neck ground joint.
