How do I wire an antique lamp?

Older lamps often require rewiring to meet modern safety standards while preserving the original wooden body and surface finish. Professional electricians can thread modern flex through existing internal channels without altering the exterior giltwood or damaging the carved structure.

Are these lamps stable on carpets?

Standard and floor lamps require a wide enough footprint to stand securely on thick floor coverings. Heavier nineteenth-century Italian and Spanish examples generally provide better balance than lighter twentieth-century standard models.

How should I clean gilded surfaces?

Dusting requires only a soft, dry brush to prevent abrasive particles from scratching the delicate gold leaf layer. Water and chemical cleaning agents must be avoided entirely, as moisture softens the underlying gesso and lifts the metal leaf.

Can I use modern lamp shades?

Shades attach via standard gallery fitters or harp mechanisms that accommodate contemporary bulb holders and fittings. Selecting fabric shades that complement the period style ensures the proportion between the gilded base and the upper shade remains balanced.
