Where should I hang these mirrors?

These pieces suit living rooms, hallways, and dining spaces where they can reflect natural light and anchor surrounding furniture. Overmantle versions place naturally above fireplaces, while smaller oval or fretwork frames fit narrower wall spaces. Ensure the wall structure securely supports the weight of timber and glass combinations, particularly for larger Victorian and Georgian examples.

How do I clean gilt wood surfaces?

Dust the carved frame gently with a dry, soft brush to protect the delicate gold leaf and gesso layers from abrasion. Avoid using commercial sprays, water, or chemical solvents, which can strip the historic gilt finish. Clean mirror glass separately using a mild glass cleaner applied directly to a cloth rather than the surrounding wood frame.

How do I identify a Georgian frame?

Georgian pieces often display balanced classical proportions, mahogany or walnut construction, and hand-carved fretwork details. Styles range from simple architectural mouldings to elaborate Rococo and Chinoiserie motifs. Examine the construction joints and the backing boards, which typically show the characteristic wear and hand tools of eighteenth-century craftsmanship.

What distinguishes Victorian styles?

Victorian examples frequently utilise heavy gesso ornamentation, ornate rose vine carvings, and expansive bevelled glass plates. These frames often reflect revival movements, drawing inspiration from earlier French and English decorative traditions. The use of dense timber substrates and darker patination further marks pieces produced during the nineteenth century.
