Where should I hang a gilded acanthus leaf frame?

These frames suit prominent positions above fireplaces, console tables or living room sofas where their reflective glass and carved detail can anchor the room's design. Ensure the wall fixings match the substantial weight of the timber and gesso construction to support the piece securely.

How do I clean a historic gilded frame?

Dust the carved acanthus leaves gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush to remove surface particles without disturbing the delicate gold leaf. Avoid using liquid cleaners, polishes or damp cloths, as moisture damages the underlying gesso and historical gilt surface.

How do I distinguish Italian Florentine frames?

Florentine frames typically feature dense, pierced carvings of scrolling foliage and fruit that wrap heavily around the central aperture. Many of these pieces originate from nineteenth-century Italian workshops imitating earlier Renaissance and Baroque carving traditions.

What is the difference between gesso and carved wood?

Carved wood forms the structural relief carved directly by hand from solid timber, providing structural strength and deep three-dimensional form. Gesso is the fine plaster layer built up over the wood to sharpen details and provide a smooth bed for the gold leaf application.
