What is a carver chair?

A carver chair is an armchair designed specifically to match a set of dining chairs, usually placed at the head and foot of the table. The arms provide extra support and presence for the host. Historically, these chairs matched the simpler single chairs in decorative motifs while offering a wider seat and substantial elbow rests.

How do I spot a revival chair?

Revival pieces, often dating from the late 19th or early 20th centuries, copy the proportions and decorative vocabulary of 18th-century originals. Close inspection of the timber ageing, tool marks, and interior construction helps distinguish these later interpretations. Cabinet-makers working in the Victorian and Edwardian eras often produced exceptional matching sets of eight or ten using historical styles.

Which woods were used?

Mahogany remains the dominant wood found in formal dining armchairs throughout the Georgian period and subsequent revivals. Its tight grain allowed carvers to execute intricate ribbon-back and pierced designs without splintering. Country workshops utilised locally sourced timbers such as ash, elm, and fruitwood to build sturdy, honest armchairs with simple turned spindles or solid boards.

Can I mix these with modern tables?

Georgian style armchairs suit contemporary dining tables wonderfully, introducing historical contrast and warmth to modern interiors. Their classic proportions and rich timber tones anchor a dining space effectively. Ensure you check the arm height against your table apron to verify the chairs push in comfortably when not in use.
