What is a delft rack?

A delft rack is an open shelving unit designed to display plates and bowls upright against a wall. These racks form the upper section of a dresser or hang independently. They emerged to showcase imported ceramics and everyday kitchenware in country houses. The shelves typically include narrow grooves to prevent plates from slipping forward.

How do I care for waxed pine?

Waxed pine requires simple dusting with a dry cloth and occasional applications of traditional beeswax to nourish the timber. Avoid placing these pieces near direct heat sources or strong sunlight. Maintaining a stable indoor humidity prevents the softwood from drying out or splitting. Gentle care preserves the historical patina accumulated over generations.

How do I identify a period piece?

Period pieces display construction methods typical of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, such as hand-cut boards and early iron fixings. Tool marks and timber shrinkage offer clues to their age. Examine the backboards, nail types, and surface wear for consistency with the stated era. Original paint layers and historic patinas provide further confirmation of authenticity.
