How do I date a silhouette?

Dating relies on costume details, hair styles, and the framing materials used in the piece. Regency dress with high waistlines and specific cap styles often point to the early nineteenth century. Backing papers and framing techniques also provide clues to the period. Earlier Georgian examples typically display distinct mounting styles compared to later Victorian iterations.

Were all silhouettes cut by hand?

Most period works were meticulously cut freehand using small scissors from black paper. Artists occasionally employed mechanical devices like physiognotraces to trace profiles before cutting. Hand-cut examples reveal subtle irregularities upon close inspection, distinguishing them from later printed reproductions.

How should I display them?

Silhouettes require hanging away from direct sunlight to prevent the paper and watercolour pigments from fading. Maintaining stable indoor humidity protects the original wood frames and glass. Grouping complementary portraits together creates an engaging wall display reminiscent of period parlours. Ensure the hanging hardware securely supports the weight of the antique glass and frame.

What is a hollow-cut silhouette?

A hollow-cut silhouette involves cutting the profile out of a sheet of white paper, which is then laid over a dark background fabric or paper. The resulting portrait appears in relief against the dark backing. This technique differs from solid black paper cutouts mounted onto a light surface. Many artists signed directly beneath the aperture window created by the cut.
