How were these tables used?

These pieces functioned as everyday side tables or console tables against parlour walls when not in use. During evening gatherings, the hinged top folded open to create a stable surface for card games and social entertainment. Players gathered around the baize-lined interior to participate in period pastimes. Once the evening concluded, the leaf folded back and the table returned to its compact perimeter position.

How do I live with a card table?

Place the table against a drawing room or hallway wall in its closed configuration to display the timber grain and crossbanding. It occupies minimal floor space while functioning as a display surface for decorative objects. When hosting, pull the table into the room and unfold the top for use. Protect the polished wood surfaces from moisture and direct heat to preserve the antique finish.

How do I tell George III from Regency pieces?

George III pieces frequently display straight architectural lines, subtle mahogany veneers, and restrained carved details such as square or tapered legs. They embody classical proportions associated with the eighteenth century. Regency items often incorporate bolder decorative elements, including brass inlay, rosewood timbers, and heavier pedestal or sabre leg configurations. These reflect nineteenth-century stylistic shifts toward archaeological and exotic influences.

What is a concertina action?

A concertina action is an ingenious framework that expands outward on expanding wooden hinges when the table top opens. This allows all four legs to move into supporting positions at the corners. This mechanism differs from simple swing-leg designs by providing balanced structural support underneath the entire opened leaf. It represents a more complex method of construction found on superior examples.
