What is a french wooden chevet?

A french wooden chevet is a traditional bedside table or small cabinet originating from France. It is designed to sit next to a bed for holding nighttime essentials. These pieces typically feature a combination of drawers, cupboards, or open surfaces, constructed from various native and exotic woods.

How were these tables used originally?

In historical French bedrooms, these cabinets served as practical storage beside the bed. They held chamber pots, water pitchers, books, or personal items. Today, they function similarly as bedside tables, supporting reading lamps, alarm clocks, and modern accessories while adding historical character to a room.

How do I choose the right period piece?

Consider the primary wood, decorative details, and construction style to match your interior aesthetic. Pieces range from simpler painted country designs to ornate marquetry cabinets. Checking the materials like marble tops and brass mounts helps determine the specific decorative character of each table.

How do I care for antique wood furniture?

Maintain antique wooden chevets by keeping them away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations. This protects the timber and veneer from drying out. Clean surfaces gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical polishes that can damage historic finishes.
